Bird Nests Inside Kitchen and Bathroom Exhaust Vents Caused a Much Bigger Problem

June 7, 2026 ~3 min read

We recently responded to a call from a homeowner in the Toronto GTA who noticed unusual activity around their exterior vent covers.

Birds had been flying in and out of the vents for weeks, and eventually the homeowner started hearing scratching and movement noises inside the walls.

After a full inspection, we discovered multiple bird nests built deep inside the kitchen and bathroom exhaust ducts.

Unfortunately, the problem didn’t stop there.

How Birds Get Inside Exhaust Vents

Most homes rely on small exterior vent covers to protect exhaust ducts from weather and wildlife.

When these covers become damaged, broken, or are missing entirely, birds can easily enter and begin building nests inside the ductwork.

Kitchen and bathroom exhaust vents are especially attractive because they provide warmth, shelter, and protection from predators.

Over time, nesting materials continue to accumulate and airflow becomes severely restricted.

What We Found

After opening the vent system, we found large amounts of nesting material deep inside the exhaust ducts.

The nests contained:

  • Twigs
  • Grass
  • Feathers
  • Dirt and debris

The blockage was restricting airflow and preventing the ventilation system from working properly.

Several sections of the duct required deep cleaning to completely remove the contamination left behind by the birds.

The Hidden Problem: Bird Mites Inside the Home

One of the biggest concerns wasn’t the nest itself.

The homeowner had started noticing tiny insects appearing throughout the house.

The source turned out to be bird mites.

Bird mites often remain behind after birds leave a nest. Once their natural host is gone, they begin searching for new places to hide and can spread throughout the home.

This is one of the most common secondary problems we encounter after bird infestations.

Our Solution

To fully resolve the issue, we performed several steps:

Nest Removal

All nesting materials were safely removed from the exhaust ducts.

Deep Vent Cleaning

The kitchen and bathroom vent systems were thoroughly cleaned to remove debris, dust, and contamination.

Bird Mite Treatment

The affected areas inside the home were treated to help eliminate bird mites and reduce the risk of reinfestation.

New Vent Protection

We installed new wildlife-proof vent covers designed to prevent birds from entering the duct system in the future.

Why Vent Protection Matters

A properly installed vent cover helps prevent:

  • Birds
  • Squirrels
  • Mice
  • Insects
  • Debris accumulation

It is one of the simplest ways to protect your ventilation system and avoid costly repairs.

Signs You May Have Birds Inside Your Vent

Watch for these common warning signs:

  • Birds frequently gathering near exterior vents
  • Scratching or chirping sounds inside walls
  • Reduced airflow from bathroom or kitchen fans
  • Nesting material visible around the vent
  • Bird mites appearing inside the home

If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to address the issue before the nest grows larger and causes further damage.

Final Thoughts

What started as a simple bird nest turned into a ventilation, contamination, and pest-control issue.

The good news is that the entire system was cleaned, protected, and restored to proper operation.
