Dead Squirrel Found in Water Heater Vent – Real Service Call in Brampton

March 5, 2026 ~4 min read

Recently our team at Service Guys responded to a service call in Brampton, part of the Greater Toronto Area, where a homeowner reported two unusual problems:

  • their water heater was not functioning properly, and

  • there was a strange noise coming from the vent system.

What initially sounded like a mechanical issue quickly turned into a wildlife removal situation — and a potentially serious safety risk.

The Initial Problem: Water Heater Issues and Strange Noises

The homeowner noticed that the water heater was intermittently malfunctioning, and at the same time they could hear scratching or movement coming from the vent pipe that runs through the house and exits the roof.

In homes across the Greater Toronto Area, this type of noise is often the first sign that wildlife has entered the ventilation system.

When we inspected the vent, the cause became clear.

What We Found Inside the Vent

Inside the pipe we discovered a large squirrel nest built directly inside the ventilation system.

The situation included:

  • One dead squirrel

  • One live squirrel

  • A large amount of nesting material (sticks, insulation, debris)

The nest had been built because the vent pipe did not have a protective cap or wildlife guard installed.

Without this protection, animals such as squirrels, birds, and raccoons can easily enter the system and create nests.

Why This Is a Serious Problem

When animals build nests inside vents connected to appliances like water heaters or furnaces, several dangerous issues can occur:

1. Blocked Exhaust

Water heaters require proper airflow to vent combustion gases safely. A nest can partially or completely block the pipe.

2. Carbon Monoxide Risk

If exhaust gases cannot exit properly, carbon monoxide can build up inside the home.

3. Appliance Damage

Blocked vents can cause overheating or system shutdowns, leading to expensive repairs.

4. Fire Hazard

Dry nesting material combined with heat from appliances creates a real fire risk.

What Our Technicians Did

Our team performed the following steps:

1. Full vent inspection
We inspected the entire vent line to determine the level of blockage.

2. Partial nest removal
We removed as much nesting material as possible safely.

3. Removal of the deceased squirrel
Unfortunately, one squirrel had already died inside the nest.

4. System cleaning
The vent pipe was cleared of debris to restore airflow.

Because one squirrel was still alive, we left part of the nest in place temporarily to avoid trapping the animal deeper inside the system.

Follow-Up Visit Required

Once the remaining squirrel leaves or the nest becomes inactive, we will return to:

  • fully remove the remaining nesting material

  • deep clean the vent system

  • install a protective chimney/vent cap

This will permanently prevent wildlife from entering the pipe again.

The Real Cause: Missing Vent Protection

The root cause of this problem was simple:

There was no protective cap or wildlife guard on the vent pipe.

This small component is extremely important. Without it, animals can easily enter the system from the roof.

In the Toronto and surrounding GTA areas, wildlife intrusion into vents and chimneys is very common.

How Homeowners Can Prevent This

To avoid situations like this, homeowners should:

✔ Install chimney or vent caps
✔ Inspect roof vents annually
✔ Schedule regular vent and chimney inspections
✔ Listen for unusual scratching or movement sounds in walls or pipes

A simple protective cap can prevent thousands of dollars in repairs.

Why Regular Vent Inspections Matter

Many homeowners only discover these problems after their appliance stops working.

But regular inspection can detect:

  • animal nests

  • airflow problems

  • vent damage

  • dangerous blockages

Early detection protects both your home and your family’s safety.
